Most leaders face difficult situations to manage daily, for example, a disgruntled team member, where emotions can be seen as contagious and tend to contain them before they infect the team at large.


But guess what? You, the positive leaders, can be the best tool to catalyze a negative emotion and turn it into an action that has an impact on your team. 🤓


Here’s how to turn your team’s frustration into motivation!

Label the negative emotion and engage.


Many leaders try to rescue people from negative emotions or withdraw from them. Neither approach is effective because both mask the feelings, ignoring the energy bubbling underneath. 


Instead, engage disappointed team members. Name the negative emotion and invite them to talk about it.

Feed the self-coach, not the self-critic.


Once you have identified the emotion and exposed the raw energy underneath, remember that it is just that: Raw energy. 


At this stage, it may trigger the voice of self-coaching in us that motivates us to direct the negative energy and turn it into action. 


Effective coaches engage people in creating a productive answer to the question, “What is this emotion telling me?” 


The self-critic answers with a list of character defects: “I’m stupid, lazy, unlikeable.” 


The self-coach answers with a list of actions: “I need to work harder, think differently, and recruit support because I’m not there yet.”

Channel energy to action.


Leaders can channel negative emotions into things they can control or toward highly productive ends. 


The best alternative is to create a clear picture of the gap between a future of action and one of inaction and use the difference to channel the energy into the right direction.


Negative emotions are painful, but leaders can help turn them into something positive.
